My dog used to stay awake all night or wake up after any little noise. Initially, I thought, it would be a good idea to get a dog that was active enough to make a good watchdog, to be sure that any intruders are warned of the fact that my home is not a good place to break in.
But my border collie, unfortunately, did the job a little bit too well. That means he barks, not only when at home, but also when the the mail arrives, when visitors knock on the door, when children walk down the street, and when cars drive along, but also at squirrels, insects, and even when the wind blows the grass. Everything that makes the tiniest bit of sound at all will attract his attention and cause him to bark for a long time.
I was pulling out my hair, just didnt know what to do. I had always been against these dog anti-bark collars, but eventually I decided It was enough. The thing about anti-bark collars that disturbed me most was that I thought they were so inhumane. If you do not like the habits of dogs, whether they are barking or sniffing, I reasoned, you should not get a dog.
Obtaining a collar with an anti bark shock, seemed to me too much for my dog. Each time he barked, he would receive a shock and learn a lesson. I thought it was just cruel to do some form of harm just to get my dog do what I want.
Still, I needed to combat barking. My dog convinced me one night when I woke up at least six times. I had to work the next day and it was very disturbing for me. I did some research on this topic and found that there are various forms of anti bark collars, the static shock ones which give a low level electic shock, there were others such as citronella collars which give off a smell dogs do not like. There was also ultrasonic collars which produce a high pitched noise that disturbs any dog, but is harmless for humans. If the dog starts barking he should stop after hearing the unpleasant feeling.
I tried various dog anti bark collars and they did actually work for a while, but that was short lived. I found that Sammy got used to them after a while and they just didnt work as well.
There was light at the end of the tunnel, I got talking to my neighbours one day who had previously had similar problems with their dogs. They had found a dog training course which was really low cost and helped them hugely. In fact they now have virtually no barking problems with their dog. Well anyway, I decided to give this a go….Well What can I say, it was an amazing result for me.
