How can I stop my dog (a Maltese) from the aggressive barking and behavior to people and other dog?

I have a 2 years ancient Maltese, whenever I walk him he would bark to people or dog walking by even across the street, his behavior is aggressive. Sometimes at night when I bring him to the front yard to potty, he also barks for no reason even there is nobody around. Friends suggested that I should consider a collar with vibration to control his barking. Any advice is appreciated.

I would just enroll him in obedience classes, and train him properly instead of using one of those collars.

i have a maltese…she is five years ancient and she barks a lot too. my other family members all have malteses too and they all bark…malteses are pretty protective so i reckon that’s maybe why they bark so much. my dog freaks out whenever she sees another dog. i have told my parents we should get a bark collar for her, but they refuse because they reckon it might hurt her (she is their baby haha).

Your dog is demonstrating dominant behavior. When you’re walking, I assume he’s out in front of you – rather than beside or behind you.

Know that dogs travel in packs with the leader in the front position. The leader is tasked with choosing which direction to go and determining whether anyone or anything approaching should be perceived as a threat. Your dog is incorrectly interpreting that other dogs & people are a threat.

Your goal should be to right ANY unwanted behavior and establish yourself as a leader. Leaders walk in front and are cool, confident, and assertive. Your bag of tools for correcting this – or any other behavior – CANNOT include frustration, rage, or despair. When your dog perceives you as the leader, he should mimic YOUR energy and respond to your corrections more quickly.

How to stop barking dogs!

Hey this is John, above is my 2 year old border collie. I built this site to help others who are struggling with dog behavioural problems.

Up to a few months a go Sammy had a few behaviour type problems and barked a lot. To the point where my neighbours were complaining regularly.

I have searched high and low for the answer, I tried out lots of different methods, including remote static and vibration colars, citronella colars and various other products, with no real success.

Well there is a way......

I eventually found my way and Sammy and me have worked through our problems. Sammy no longer barks, we are both much happier and no more complains from my neighbours !!

I wish I new back then what I know now! To find out more about how I did it click here.
