I trained mine when they were puppies. I said “no barking” until they stopped barking, and when they stopped barking, I praised them. As many times as it took until I won the war. At night I have them in a crate by the bed with a night light on so they can see me and be reassured that I did not abandon them. I play a cd or radio until they fall asleep. They do not have to be in the crate forever, just until they are potty trained, and house trained. We practiced leaving one day. We pretended to leave, and raised the garage door, and when they started barking, we popped back in and said “settle down” and when they did, we praised them, and then we did it over and over and over until it became “no huge deal” that we were leaving because we came back. We made sure they had toys and bones and we left the radio on for them.

Basset Hounds do tend to bark, don’t they? I used the book “Barking: The Sound of a Language” by Turid Rugaas to help me know why my dog was barking. I then could work to lessen some of his outbursts using her suggestions.

He still barks, but nor nearly as often, and he has learned more control. He has also learned “indoor voice” which helps. It takes patience, and persistence, but training can work.

An instinctive canine behavior, a bark now and then reminds you that your dog is still very much a dog. But, constant barking can be disruptive, if not downright nerve-racking. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent or curb problem barking.

How to stop barking dogs!

Hey this is John, above is my 2 year old border collie. I built this site to help others who are struggling with dog behavioural problems.

Up to a few months a go Sammy had a few behaviour type problems and barked a lot. To the point where my neighbours were complaining regularly.

I have searched high and low for the answer, I tried out lots of different methods, including remote static and vibration colars, citronella colars and various other products, with no real success.

Well there is a way......

I eventually found my way and Sammy and me have worked through our problems. Sammy no longer barks, we are both much happier and no more complains from my neighbours !!

I wish I new back then what I know now! To find out more about how I did it click here.
