Unfortunately, theres nothing you can do besides getting him an anti-bark collar. A lot of dogs do this.

You could also start playing with your dog/walking them more. They get excited when someone is at the door because it is often the only exciting thing that happens to them.

Remove the door and place some hippie beads in its place.

  • ♫•Hiro•♫ says:

Dogs do that because if someone knocks or doorbells, they don’t know what the sound is and stuff.

I saw it on TV, you face the dog and have someone knock at the door and when he stops barking you say excellent quite and give him a treat. He only gets the treat when he’s silent. Excellent luck :)

  • cheesypeesee says:

yell “NO!” RIGHT when he does it
Don’t wait too long to yell or the dog wont know what you are punishing him for and then it won’t work

Well excellent boy for protecting his family, but I know what you mean so what you do is tell him it’s okay, excellent dog and as soon as he quiets give him praise or treat until he gets what It’s okay means! My dogs all bark but stops as soon as I acknowledge that someone is at the door! Excellent luck takes some patience for a week or two..

My neighbors dog is insane and use to bark constantly. I saw this in a magazine and I bought it for my backyard. You can’t even tell its to keep the dog from barking and just looks like a regualr birdhouse. My neighbors have no clue that thats why the dog doesn’t bark anymore. It may work indoors and be decorative as well.

See the link below to see what I am talking about.

Uhm he is a hound dog, they bark a lot, do you reckon his behavior is going to turn off because your kid wants to sleep? Honestly keep the crib at the other end of the house and get to the door quickly. Its one thing to teach him to be silent once you are there, its another to try and turn off his reactive instinct.

Its a natural stimulant, especially on his own turf, to respond to something that is going on. Most hounds are vocally respondsive, its in their nature to bay and bark.

Have someone you know go outside. You wait near the door, inside. Have the person knock. When your dog starts barking, come up behind him and kick him in the Nuts.

  • partyinmypants says:

    Shock collar

  • schwildcat1977 says:

This is easily corrected with proper training.

Every time he does it tell him firmly (without yelling at him) to stop. repeat as needed and reward him ( treat, toy, hugs, belly rubs, what ever works for him) when he does stop.

Eventually he will make the connection and you will have to say it fewer times and eventually you will not have to say it at all.

Just about any behavior can be corrected with training.

EDIT: I am completely blown away by all the stupid people that reckon that you cannot train a dog!! What is incorrect with you people?

    yell at your dog

  • ony_68 says:

Just as human language is multifaceted and multipurpose, barking allows a dog to communicate many different messages in a variety of situations. It can signal a request to an owner (“Hey, I want to go outside!”), impart a warning (“You’re in my territory!”), or simply serve to amuse when a dog has small else to do.

An instinctive canine behavior, a bark now and then reminds you that your dog is still very much a dog. But, constant barking can be disruptive, if not downright nerve-racking. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent or curb problem barking.

For a fearful barker, desensitization is the method to use.
For boredom barking can be greatly reduced if your dog gets enough mental and physical exercise. Leave him plenty to do when you’re not around.
For dogs who bark when frustrated, eliminate the stimulus whenever possible.

I got the The “SpraySense Citronella Anti Bark Collar” about 6 years ago for my dog when we went to a silent mobile home park. He was not a chronic barker, but I did not know if he would bark when I left him alone in a new place (with close neighbors all around). He was very sensitive to the collars effects and did not make a peep after the first couple of barks! I reckon the noise of spray got his attention first… then the feel of it…. then the smell of it. Since beagles are “scent” hounds, I bet it would work well for you!

THIS PRODUCT WORKS WELL BECAUSE IT ADDRESSES SEVERAL SENSES (sound, smell, sight, feel) – AND IT IS HUMANE! Shock collars are not humane and can make a host of new problems!

Here is an excerpt from one site that sells the product:

Designed to control nuisance barking, the SpraySense Citronella Anti-Bark Collar uses patented technology to deliver a harmless burst of citronella spray that distracts your dog and interrupts your dog’s barking. The spray works with four of the dog’s five senses – he hears it, sees it, feels it and smells it. Citronella is a unique scent that most dogs don’t normally encounter. It’s non-offensive to humans, yet “unusual” enough to distract your dog.

READ MY STORY!

How to stop barking dogs!

Hey this is John, above is my 2 year old border collie. I built this site to help others who are struggling with dog behavioural problems.

Up to a few months a go Sammy had a few behaviour type problems and barked a lot. To the point where my neighbours were complaining regularly.

I have searched high and low for the answer, I tried out lots of different methods, including remote static and vibration colars, citronella colars and various other products, with no real success.

Well there is a way......

I eventually found my way and Sammy and me have worked through our problems. Sammy no longer barks, we are both much happier and no more complains from my neighbours !!

I wish I new back then what I know now! To find out more about how I did it click here.
