Is this an effective way to train my dog to stop barking?

I heard that if you want your dog to stop barking you fill a dixie cup with water and when the dog barks you throw the water onto the dog and leave silently.
has anyone done this does it work??

Thats what dogs do, they bark. If you didn’t want the dog to bark, why did you get a dog? I bet your dog want to train you to stop talking.

I did it to my out of control jack russell. It worked to a point. After a while, if he even saw the jug in my hand he would stop barking and hide. But you have to look at why he is barking, Boredom? Attention? Make sure he has enough toys to keep him occupied. Excellent. Luck.

I’ve have never heard of that but I would imagine it’s an ancient redneck method like the whole can and stone technique. Dogs bark for attention and if you don’t give it to them they eventually make the connection that they will not get it if they continue barking. Make sure you are staisfying all your dogs needs. Most behavioral problems can be fixed with frequent exercise. Training a dog is 50% exercise to satisfy the dogs drives, 25% dicipline to establish dominance and order, and 25% positive reinforcement to encourage positive and desired behaviors.

To get my dogs to stop barking is i have a Soda can filled with about 15 pennies. Every time they bark i shake the can and they are become silent. I used to work at a cage free dog resort. We had anywhere from 15 up to 100+ all off leash in the same play yards. Hardly any dogs barked. We used shaker cans. The Shaker Can are also very effective to deter dog fights.

Get a spray bottle and fill it with water. When your dog does something (i.e. barking) spray him/her on the nose 1 – 2 times. This has worked effectively with my dogs.

buy a citronella coller. i used one on my rottie to stop him barking at other dogs and it worked.

No this does not work. If you have the patience to be consistant here is something that will work.
When he/she barks wrap your hand around his muzzle and give the command that you so choose to use. Silent, no bark, etc. Don’t squeeze as to hurt, but enough so that he can’t continue barking. Do not let go until he stops struggling and is not trying to bark. As soon as that happens let go and praise…excellent boy, excellent girl, etc. EVERY time he barks repeat this. Even if it is seconds later.
When you can see that he is starting to get the hang of it then instead of wrapping your hand around the muzzle you can just place your open flat hand on the muzzle. Before you know it he will be respnding first time to the command.

don’t know about the water trick, it may give him a phobia. I heard that if you firmly say no at the same time nudging him when he barks showing your disapproval it should help or blocking him back from what he’s aggressive towards. and be consistent. and after he’s settled a while reward him for his cool behavior.

Rent Cesar Milan the dog whisperer DVD’s they are fantastic. Phone around to video stores and see if you can find them. A tired dog is cool and less likely to bark all the time. Walk the dog 3 times a day.

maybe you can give it’s food or drink don’t make them mad ok !

  • Angel says:

Instead of throwing the water on him, get a new plastic squirt bottle and fill it up with water. When you don’t want him barking, give him a squirt or two and say No Bark or just plain NO. That’s better than getting him soaked.

How to stop barking dogs!

Hey this is John, above is my 2 year old border collie. I built this site to help others who are struggling with dog behavioural problems.

Up to a few months a go Sammy had a few behaviour type problems and barked a lot. To the point where my neighbours were complaining regularly.

I have searched high and low for the answer, I tried out lots of different methods, including remote static and vibration colars, citronella colars and various other products, with no real success.

Well there is a way......

I eventually found my way and Sammy and me have worked through our problems. Sammy no longer barks, we are both much happier and no more complains from my neighbours !!

I wish I new back then what I know now! To find out more about how I did it click here.
